Let’s start out with some good news first! Our girl Cinnamon finally had her babies on April 3rd in the early morning! She gave birth to two healthy baby girls, named Sugar and Butterscotch (who we later found out is actually a boy!). There was a third little boy but unfortunately we weren’t around when she gave birth and he didn’t make it. Sugar and Butterscotch however are doing very well and Cinnamon is a great mom! Sugar is already a little explorer while Butterscotch is more reserved. In a couple more days these girls will be ready to go back with the rest of the herd.

As much as I really wanted this post to be all sunshine and rainbows, mother nature usually has other plans. Around 6pm that same night Freyja began showing signs of delivery so we put her in a pen and waited. Around 8 she had her first, nearly all white boy who we named Thor. She began cleaning him up no problem but a few minutes later the second boy, Loki, was born. Freyja was still working on Thor so we cleared Loki’s head, dried him off a bit and gave him to Freyja and she started cleaning them both. After an hour or so Loki was already trying to stand and both boys looked very healthy. We decided to call it a night and let Freyja bond with her new babies. The next morning when we went to check on them, Loki was very cold and barely moving. We tried to get him to nurse from Freyja but he just wouldn’t latch on and Freyja kept trying to kick him. I was able to get him to drink some colostrum from a bottle and Thor was able to nurse from Freyja but also while getting kicked. While I was feeding Loki, Freyja kept ramming Thor but throughout the day we kept an eye on them. When we checked on them later on, Loki had found his way between some backer board and the wall and was barely responsive. We immediately put him under a heat lamp and ultimately decided to bring both of them inside the house since Freyja did not want anything to do with them. Thor is a little rambunctious baby but Loki is still struggling. I’ve had to tube feed him as he is currently too weak to suckle. We’re now almost 48 hours after birth and Loki is still struggling. I’m doing what I can using the experience I have from rehabilitating wildlife but he has a huge battle in front of him. To end on a happier note, Gaia is still expecting to have her babies any day! If Loki is unable to turn things around, we’re hoping we’ll be able to get her to accept Thor as one of her own. Subscribe below to get baby updates!
